Viking longships: construction, use and finds

The Viking longships – known in Old Norse as langskip or herskip – were the typical narrow, fast warships of the Viking Age from the 8th to the 11th century. These ships embody, like no other artefact, the maritime superiority of the Scandinavian seafarers. Unlike the wider merchant ships, such as the knorr (knarr or kaupskip), longships were primarily designed for military purposes: war, raids, troop transport and lightning-fast attacks on the coasts Europe. Their narrow shape and flat hull enabled the Vikings to land so swiftly that even mounted scouts could barely raise the alarm in time.

The clinker-built method

The construction of a longship was a masterpiece of medieval craftsmanship. The structure was built using the so-called clinker-built method: oak planks were laid in an overlapping pattern and fastened with iron rivets. This technique gave the hull both flexibility and strength – crucial for navigation in rough waters. The keel formed the backbone of every longship. The frame notches for the planks were crafted with such precision that modern archaeologists can determine the exact felling date of the trees used through tree-ring analysis (dendrochronology).

The rectangular sail, made of wool or linen, could reach speeds of up to 14 knots in a favourable wind. But its true strength lay in the combination: in calm conditions or for rapid manoeuvres, the warriors would use the oars – arranged in rows, they allowed for precise navigation even in narrow fjords.

Classifications and ship types

The Vikings distinguished their longships by size and purpose. Three main types can be clearly distinguished from one another.

Karvi

The karvi was the smallest longship, suitable for 12 to 30 men. It was used for local voyages and coastal exploration and, thanks to its short length, was particularly manoeuvrable in shallow waters.

Snekkja

The Snekkja was the most common raiding vessel in the Viking fleets, equipped with 20 to 30 oar seats. It was the standard vessel for raids and shorter sea voyages.

Drakkar (dragon ships)

The drakkar was the largest and most magnificent warship of the Vikings – with over 30 rowing benches and room for up to 100 warriors. These ships were reserved for kings and prominent warlords and often bore intricately crafted dragon heads on their bows. This variety of types demonstrates the sophisticated development of Viking shipbuilding: each design was optimised for specific requirements.

Purposes: war, raids and exploration

Military operations

The longships enabled the Vikings to maintain supremacy at sea for three centuries. Under rulers such as King Canute the Great (reigned 1016–1035), who united Denmark, Norway, England and parts of Sweden, they formed the backbone of Scandinavian naval power. Their shallow draught was of strategic importance: the ships could land directly on beaches and be hauled ashore within minutes. Loot was quickly loaded, and before defenders could react, the attackers were already back at sea.

Trade routes and exploration

Although primarily warships, longships were also used for other purposes:

  • Exploratory voyages: from Iceland via Greenland to North America (Vinland)
  • Transport: Rapid deployment of troops and weapons
  • Diplomacy: Representative voyages to other kings

The ability to operate both on the high seas and in rivers and fjords made the longship the most versatile type of vessel in the early Middle Ages.

The Gokstad ship (c. 900 AD)

Discovered in Norway in 1880, the Gokstad ship is one of the best-preserved Viking ship finds ever. Its key dimensions:

  • Beam amidships: 5.2 metres
  • Oar positions: 32
  • Draught: approx. 0.8 metres

The oak planks have been dated to 895 AD using dendrochronology. The ship exemplifies the classic form of an ocean-going longship.

The Oseberg Ship (c. 820 AD)

The Oseberg ship, discovered in Norway in 1904, measures 21.5 metres in length. It served as a burial site for two women of high rank and contained exceptionally rich grave goods – ranging from textiles to intricately carved animal-headed posts.

In Roskilde Fjord in Denmark, five ships from the 11th century were recovered, which had been sunk as a blockade. The finds include various types of ships, ranging from coastal vessels to ocean-going longships:

Replicas and modern reconstructions

The Havhingsten fra Glendalough

The most famous replica is the Havhingsten fra Glendalough (English: Sea Stallion of Glendalough) – a 30-metre-long replica of an Irish longship from 1042:

  • Crew: around 60 rowers and sailors

In 2008, this ship crossed the Atlantic in 27 days, covering a distance of around 4,800 kilometres. The voyage impressively demonstrated the exceptional seaworthiness of the original design: top speeds of over 20 km/h under oars were achieved, and the ship weathered severe storms in the North Sea.

The Helge Ask and other reconstructions have demonstrated in practical use that longships could easily catch up with fully laden merchant ships such as the Knorr. The superiority in speed was one of the most important tactical strengths of these ships.

Whilst the longship was optimised for speed and manoeuvrability, the knorr offered greater stability on the high seas and space for cargo. Both types of ship complemented each other perfectly in the world of the Vikings.

How many Vikings could fit on a longship?

How long did it take to build a longship?

Building a medium-sized longship took an experienced team around one to two years. Everything – from felling the oak trees to drying the timber and the final assembly – required specialised knowledge and craftsmanship. Large drakkars for a king could take even longer.
