About Guédelon Medieval Site
A 13th-century castle being built before your very eyes
In the heart of Burgundy, the Guédelon Medieval Building Site is one of Europe's most ambitious archaeological and tourist projects. Since 1997, a team of builders, masons, stonecutters, carpenters and blacksmiths has been constructing a 13th-century medieval castle using only the techniques and materials of the period, in Treigny in the Yonne department. The 2026 season runs from early April to late October.
Visitors can watch the construction of a real fortified castle in real time: stonemasons carving sandstone blocks, carpenters erecting oak frames, blacksmiths making tools and keys by hand, and rope makers weaving hemp. Specialised guides explain each stage of the construction process and the medieval history it embodies. Hands-on workshops allow families to learn about the skills of medieval craftsmen. The site attracts more than 300,000 visitors a year and is classified as a Grand Site de France.
The site is closed on certain Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so it is advisable to check the opening calendar before visiting.
