What makes a LARP blouse? An overview of cut, fabric and style

Was macht eine LARP-Bluse aus? Schnitt, Stoff und Stil im Überblick

What distinguishes a blouse for LARP and medieval markets from a modern blouse lies primarily in the cut and the material. Typical features include loose, flowing fits with a Carmen neckline or deep décolletage, flared sleeves, ruffle trim on the collar and cuffs, and lacing at the waist or sleeves. These details create the historical-fantasy character that makes an immediate impact at events.

When it comes to materials, 100% cotton dominates – and for good reason: cotton is breathable, washable, comfortable to wear even in summer temperatures, and can withstand the odd rain shower at the market. You won’t find polyester or synthetic blends in this range. Anyone who spends hours in a camp or is actively fighting and moving around at a LARP event will quickly notice the difference. Historically inspired craftsmanship also means: no zips, no modern button plackets – but lacing, buttons with eyelets or an open neckline.

The range of uses is wide: LARP clothing for women, visits to medieval markets, fantasy events, fancy dress parties and pirate outfits all benefit equally from a well-fitting blouse as a base.

Pirate blouse: history, name and what lies behind it

Piratenbluse: Geschichte, Bezeichnung und was dahintersteckt

The term ‘pirate blouse’ is firmly established in the German-speaking world – and refers to a loose-fitting women’s blouse with ruffled trim, an off-the-shoulder or low-cut collar and a certain dramatic flair. Historically speaking, however, the correct term would be “shirt” or “undershirt”: the garment we now romanticise as the pirate look is more akin to the simple everyday shirt of the early modern period – sturdy, loose-fitting, made of linen or cotton.

What did pirates actually wear historically? Not dramatic ruffled blouses from Hollywood, but simple, functional everyday clothing: a loose-fitting shirt, knee-length trousers, a plain linen waistcoat, occasionally a headscarf. The iconic pirate look, as seen at medieval markets and in LARP circles, is a stylised fantasy interpretation – and that is perfectly fine. As such, a pirate costume isn’t problematic either: it’s a creative, historically inspired outfit with no intention of trivialising history, and it has had a firm place in the re-enactment and LARP scene for decades.

If you want to complete your pirate outfit, you’ll also find matching pirate clothing, pirate shoes and pirate accessories in the shop.

A comparison of the main blouse styles: Carmen, Aila, Birga and more.

Carmen

Loose & sleeveless

The Carmen style is the centrepiece of any pirate outfit: off-the-shoulder neckline, loose fit, virtually no restrictions on movement. Available in white, black and natural – ideal as a first blouse or as a versatile base.

Birga

Ruffles & 3/4 sleeves

The Birga combines 3/4-length sleeves with a ruffled trim at the neckline. This gives it a slightly more formal look than the Carmen and makes it easy to pair with bodices – one of the most sought-after all-rounders in the range.

Aila

Fitted & laced

The Aila features lacing on the sleeves and waist – allowing the fit to be adjusted to suit. The figure-hugging cut makes it the top choice for fantasy characters with a strong silhouette.

Styling ideas: How to build your outfit around the blouse

Getting started · Blouse + skirt

The simplest combination: a blouse paired with a LARP skirt for women creates a convincing peasant or country girl silhouette. A hemp-coloured or natural-coloured blouse emphasises the rustic character. This combination also works well as a straightforward starter outfit for market-goers.

LARP · Blouse + bodice or corset

The classic combination for the pirate or market woman: a white Carmen or Birga blouse under a leather corset or pirate bodice immediately creates a harmonious overall look. The bodice cinches the blouse and shapes the silhouette – particularly effective with loose-fitting styles.

Complex · Blouse + waistcoat + trousers or as an undershirt

For androgynous characters such as female mercenaries or adventurers: a blouse paired with a waistcoat and LARP trousers creates a more combative look. Alternatively: a sleeveless blouse or strappy blouse can be worn as an undershirt beneath costumes and LARP dresses, adding depth to the layering.

Sizes, care and fit: What you should know before buying

Most blouses in this range are available in XS to XXL. Important: Loose fits, such as the Carmen style, can be misleading – always check the size chart in the product details, not just the label size. The Aila with lacing can be adjusted for width, offering more flexibility. For larger sizes, we recommend the XXL versions of certain styles, such as Birga or Carmen – these are explicitly marked as such.

Cotton blouses may shrink slightly on the first wash – up to half a size is normal. It is best to wash them at 30°C and not tumble dry them. Dried on a line or over a hanger, the blouses retain their shape much better. Ironing at a medium temperature is no problem.

As a rule of thumb: Carmen for maximum casualness and a pirate vibe, Birga for a slightly more structured look with ruffle details, Aila if fit and a defined silhouette are important. If you’re unsure, you’ll usually be on the right track with the Birga in natural or white as your first purchase – it’s the most versatile all-rounder in the range and can be combined in almost any way.

Questions about sizing or styling? The Vehi Mercatus team is available by phone Mon–Fri 8am–12pm and 1pm–3pm. 30-day return policy, Trusted Shops certified. The in-house brand consistently uses natural fibres – no polyester, no synthetics.

With the right blouse as a base, any LARP or medieval market outfit can be built up specifically and combined in new ways time and time again. Browse the range now and find your style – whether it’s a sleeveless summer blouse, a laced fantasy blouse or a classic pirate blouse in white.

Frequently asked questions

A pirate blouse is a loose-fitting women’s blouse with ruffled trim and an off-the-shoulder or low-cut neckline. The term is established in German-speaking countries; historically, the correct term would be ‘shirt’ or ‘tunic’. The design is a stylised, imaginative interpretation of the simple everyday clothing of the early modern period and has a firm place at medieval markets and within the LARP scene.

No. A pirate costume is considered a stylised fantasy interpretation and is fully accepted at medieval markets, LARP events and costume events. As long as it is a creative disguise with no intention of trivialising history, there are no objections. In the reenactment and LARP scene, the pirate look has been a popular character type for decades.

Most styles are available in XS to XXL; individual variants such as Birga and Carmen are also explicitly available in XXL. As loose fits can make it difficult to gauge the correct size, we recommend always checking the size chart in the product details. The Aila blouse with lacing offers additional flexibility in terms of fit.

A white or natural-coloured blouse worn under a leather corset or pirate bodice is the classic combination for a pirate or market woman. For a more rustic look, the blouse pairs well with a LARP skirt in earth tones. If you’re playing an androgynous character, pair the blouse with a waistcoat and trousers. Worn as an undershirt beneath a LARP dress or outer garment, it adds extra depth to your layering.

Cotton blouses should be washed at 30°C and air-dried – do not tumble dry, as this causes shrinkage. Slight shrinkage of up to half a size during the first wash is normal. Ironing at a medium temperature is fine and ensures the blouse looks fresh and well-kept.
