Halloween costume Elbe

Items  1 - 18 of 18

Elves are among the most popular Halloween costume themes – they combine mystique, elegance and an aesthetic that goes far beyond cheap, disposable costumes. Anyone wishing to appear as an elf on the night of 31 October will find clothing here made from natural fibres that would not look out of place at a medieval market – and which thus stands out clearly from the crowd of synthetic costumes.

What makes a convincing elf costume for Halloween?

Was macht ein überzeugendes Elben-Kostüm für Halloween aus?

The difference between a cheap costume from a discount store and a convincing elf look lies primarily in the material and the cut. Cheap fancy dress costumes are often made of polyester fabric that shines under the light, feels stiff and is uncomfortable against the skin – especially on a long Halloween evening. High-quality elven robes, on the other hand, are made from natural fibres such as 100% cotton, wool or linen, which drape naturally, are breathable and can be worn comfortably even on cooler autumn nights.

When it comes to the elven look, it is also worth distinguishing between different aesthetics: the Tolkien-inspired elf – that is, the Legolas or Galadriel type – is characterised by elegant lines, subtle trimmings, muted shades such as forest green, deep blue or natural tones, and a calm, dignified overall impression. The fairy-tale fairy look, on the other hand, relies more heavily on pastel colours, sheer fabrics and whimsical jewellery. The range here primarily covers the former style – with clothing derived from the medieval and re-enactment traditions and crafted accordingly. Trims on sleeves and hems, natural colour schemes and a timeless cut are the visual hallmarks.

Materials compared: Why natural fibres work better for an elf costume

Material Suitability Use
100% cotton Main material Dresses, tunics – breathable, natural drape, comfortable against the skin
Wool blend Autumn/Winter Warmer options for cooler Halloween nights
Leather Accessories Arm warmers, coin pouches – durable, authentic warrior look
Polyester / Synthetic Not recommended Cheap costumes – shiny, uncomfortable, visually unappealing

Our own brand, Vehi Mercatus, deliberately avoids synthetics: all fabrics are manufactured in weaving mills to our own specifications, and trims are produced according to our own designs. This is by no means a given in this price range – and it is evident in the comfort of wear right from the evening onwards.

Elven costumes for men – between warrior and ranger

For men, tunics with bordered trim are particularly suitable as the basis for an Elven costume. Pieces such as the Elven clothing from our range, including the ‘Paul’ tunic with its characteristic braided trim on the hem and sleeves, immediately convey the right image: a warrior at one with nature or a wise ranger. Combined with colours such as forest green and brown, this creates a look that radiates strength and a connection with nature.

As a characteristic elven accessory for men, we recommend the padded leather arm warmers with crossed straps (approx. €42) – a detail that instantly enhances the costume’s character and is also practical. These go well with a simple leather belt and, if desired, a light medieval cloak for appearances on cool autumn nights.

For families with children: the ‘Ailrik’ children’s tunic with a green border is available from €21 (sizes 110–164) and forms a harmonious ensemble with the parents’ costume.

Price overview – an elven look for every budget

Entry level · from ~€10–21

Individual accessories such as the late medieval brooch with glass beads (~€10) or the “Ailrik” children’s tunics from €21 offer a quick and affordable way to get started with an elven costume. Ideal if you already have a basic outfit and just need to add that elven touch.

Mid-range · ~€50–60

The “Ennlin” short-sleeved dress in blue (~€55) or similar women’s dresses provide a complete top for your Halloween outfit. Combined with a medieval money pouch “Chazza” (~€18), you can create a convincing overall look for around €75.

High-quality · from ~€75

Complete outfits from Leonardo Carbone or Battle Merchant – featuring borders, high-quality craftsmanship and a great fit – start at around €75 and go up to over €150. These pieces work not only for Halloween, but also at medieval markets or for LARP. Price range in the collection: up to €294.

Smart strategy: An affordable basic outfit combined with a high-quality leather accessory (arm warmers, money pouch, brooch) often creates a better overall impression than an expensive ready-made costume.

Elven accessories: completing the costume

No elven costume is complete without the right details. The late medieval clasp brooch with rose-cut glass beads (~€10) is a small but effective accessory – it fastens a cloak or coat and immediately lends the overall look a historical character. The padded leather arm guards with crossed straps add the warrior touch that is typical of many interpretations of elves.

The medieval money pouch “Chazza”, made from soft nappa leather and available in various colour combinations (brown/beige, red/green, black/brown, black/red) for ~€18, makes a perfect belt accessory. It is practical, looks authentic and can be combined in many ways. You can find further matching items in the categories Elf Accessories and Elf Bags and Pouches.

Elven costumes for children – Halloween for the whole family

The “Ailrik” children’s medieval tunic with green trim is the ideal starter piece for little elves: from €21, available in sizes 110 to 164, made from sturdy cotton. The material can withstand an active Halloween evening – whether trick-or-treating or playing – and is easy to wash after the festivities.

If you’re planning a family outfit, you can combine the children’s tunics directly with the adult pieces from the range: parents in an elf dress, child in the matching green tunic – this creates a harmonious overall look. You’ll find a wider range of historical costumes for children in the Medieval Clothing for Children category.

Halloween and the Elves: Where does the connection come from?

Halloween traces its origins back to the Celtic festival of Samhain, which was celebrated on 31 October. According to Celtic belief, on this night the boundaries between the world of the living and the Otherworld were said to be lifted – spirits, fairies and supernatural beings could enter the human world. In Celtic mythology, elves and fairies had a firm place as beings from this very Otherworld, which explains the thematic fit between elf costumes and Halloween from a historical perspective.

The fact that some Christians reject Halloween is linked precisely to these pagan roots: the festival is occasionally criticised by the Church as a glorification of pre-Christian rites. These religious reservations are widespread, but they do not alter the fact that Halloween is now celebrated primarily as a festival of fancy dress and creativity.

The elf costume plays a special role here: it is not a spooky Halloween costume, but an elegant one – a bridge between historical mythology and modern costume parties. Anyone who doesn’t want to appear as a zombie or vampire on Halloween, but rather as a character with depth and aesthetic appeal, would be well advised to go for an elf look. You’ll also find similarly elegant alternatives in our other Halloween costume categories, such as our witch and wizard costumes.

Elven costumes for women – from short-sleeved dresses to robes

Elben-Kostüme für Damen – vom Kurzarmkleid bis zum Gewand

The core range for women consists of several dress lines that are ideal as elf costumes. The ‘Ennlin’ short-sleeved dress in blue (~€55, sizes XS to XXXL) is made from sturdy cotton fabric and decorated with a typical border – one of the most sought-after colour options for the elven look. Blue is a classic colour in elven iconography: it symbolises wisdom, depth and magic.

Those looking for a more complete outfit will also find the “Dorothea” medieval dress and the “Sophie” medieval dress in the range – both available in various colours, including natural/blue and green as a typical elven palette. All women’s dresses in the range are made from 100% cotton or a wool blend, which enhances comfort, particularly at evening events in autumn. The wide range of sizes from XS to XXXL ensures that every figure can find the perfect elven costume.

For a complete women’s outfit, we recommend combining the dress with leather arm warmers and a colour-coordinated money cat on the belt. If you’re looking for more inspiration, why not browse the elf outfit section or take a look at our full range of elf clothing?
