Lambskin gloves and mittens made from genuine lambskin are among the warmest options for keeping your hands cosy during the cold season – whether for adults, children or babies. In this category, you’ll find gloves, mittens and baby gloves made from 100% genuine lambskin in various colours (black, brown, beige, dark brown) and sizes ranging from one size fits all for newborns to XL for adults.

Why genuine lambskin keeps you so warm – an overview of its properties

Warum echtes Lammfell so gut wärmt – die Eigenschaften im Überblick

Genuine lambskin keeps you so warm for a simple physical reason: the naturally crimped fibres form countless tiny air pockets that trap body heat like a natural cushion. Unlike synthetic fleece, lambskin actively works with the body – it keeps you warm in the cold and breathes in the heat, so your hands neither freeze nor sweat.

This property is known as temperature regulation and is a characteristic that synthetic fibres simply cannot match. At the same time, the fur’s structure wicks away moisture to the outside, preventing that familiar damp feeling found in cheap winter gloves. Another bonus: lambskin naturally contains lanolin, a wool wax that has antibacterial properties and ensures that even frequently worn gloves stay fresh for a long time.

Are lambskin gloves waterproof? Care and properties

Genuine lambskin is naturally water-repellent, but not completely waterproof. Light rain or snowfall are no problem – the fur initially repels moisture. In the event of prolonged exposure to wet conditions, such as heavy rain or snowball fights, you should allow the gloves to air-dry afterwards. The leather upper (nappa) on the gloves offers additional protection against moisture and extends the product’s lifespan.

Care instructions: Clean lambskin gloves only when necessary. Light soiling can be removed with a damp cloth; for more thorough cleaning, use special fur cleaners. Important – never wash in the washing machine. Hand washing with lukewarm water is possible; afterwards, lay the gloves flat to air-dry, not on radiators or in the sun. Once dry, we recommend treating them with leather care to keep the outer material supple and protect it from drying out. You’ll find suitable products under ‘Leather Colour & Care’.

Which lambskin gloves are the warmest?

Welche Lammfell-Handschuhe sind die wärmsten?

As a general rule, mittens provide more warmth than gloves because all the fingers work together to retain body heat, rather than dividing it between individual compartments. For extreme cold – such as sub-zero temperatures or long periods outdoors – lambskin mittens are therefore the first choice.

However, the thickness and density of the fur are the key factors in thermal performance. 100% genuine lambskin significantly outperforms synthetic fleece lining because the natural fibre structure creates more air pockets. Those who remain active in very low temperatures can also combine fur and blankets or hand warmers. Lambskin products are particularly recommended for babies and toddlers, as young children cool down more quickly than adults and their need for warmth is correspondingly higher.

Natural fibres instead of faux fur – a conscious choice

Genuine lambskin is a natural product with a long lifespan. With proper care, high-quality lambskin gloves will last through many winter seasons without any loss of quality – a clear advantage over synthetic linings, which compress and lose their thermal performance after just a few years. In everyday life, this means: no microplastics when washing, no faux fur, no fleece.

All gloves in this category are from our own brand, Vehi Mercatus. There is a clear principle behind this decision: exclusively natural fibres, actively and consciously chosen – no synthetics, even if cheaper alternatives were available on the market. The sheepskins and hare skins in the rest of our range follow the same approach.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, lambskin gloves are among the warmest winter gloves available. The naturally crimped fibres form air pockets that trap body heat, and the lanolin they contain has an antibacterial effect. In addition, genuine lambskin actively regulates temperature – it keeps you warm in the cold and breathes in the heat, so your hands neither freeze nor sweat.

Mittens made from 100% genuine lambskin are particularly warm because all the fingers work together to trap heat. The thickness of the fur is key – the denser and thicker the fur, the better the insulation. Lambskin mittens are far superior to synthetic alternatives, as the natural fibre structure creates more air pockets than fleece or faux fur.

Lambskin is naturally water-repellent, but not completely waterproof. In light rain or snowfall, the moisture initially rolls off. If the gloves get thoroughly wet for a prolonged period, they should be air-dried afterwards. Fingerless gloves with a nappa leather outer material offer additional protection against moisture.

Lambskin gloves should never be washed in the washing machine. Light soiling can be removed with a damp cloth; for heavier soiling, a special fur cleaner is recommended. Hand washing with lukewarm water is possible – afterwards, lay them flat to air dry, not on radiators. Finally, treat the outer leather with leather care.

Baby gloves made from genuine lambskin are suitable from birth. The one-size-fits-all design is suitable for babies up to approximately 30 months. The soft fur lies directly against the delicate skin and does not scratch. Lambskin is particularly recommended for newborns and toddlers, as they cool down more quickly than adults and benefit greatly from the natural heat retention.
