Johannes Gutenberg: Life and origins

Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden, known as Gutenberg, was born around 1400 in Mainz – at the “Hof zum Gutenberg”, from which his name derives. The exact year of his birth remains a mystery, as no birth certificate exists. He came from a wealthy patrician family in Mainz with political rights and influence. The political tensions between the patricians and the guilds shaped his life – in 1411, the family was forced to flee temporarily to Eltville am Rhein.
Early years in Mainz (until 1428)
The first confirmed mention of Gutenberg dates from 1420: he appears as a witness in an inheritance case in Mainz. In 1428/1429, he left his hometown in the wake of renewed guild uprisings against the patricians.
Experimental phase in Strasbourg (1434–1444)
In Strasbourg, Gutenberg worked as a goldsmith and founded financial companies. Court records from 1438/1439 mention a mysterious ‘aventur und kunst’ (adventure and art) with partners such as Andreas Dritzeln. Historians suspect this refers to his early printing experiments – witnesses reported seeing metal parts and a ‘printing instrument’.
Return to Mainz and setting up a workshop (from 1448)
Around 1448, Gutenberg returned to Mainz. With loans from Johannes Fust – 800 guilders in 1450, a further 800 guilders in 1452 – he set up his printing workshop. The legal dispute with Fust in 1455/1456 ended tragically: Gutenberg had to repay 2,026 guilders and lost his presses, type and parts of the Bible production.
Later years and death
In 1465, Gutenberg received a pension from the Archbishop of Mainz, Adolf II of Nassau. He died before 26 February 1468. His grave in the Franciscan Church in Mainz was destroyed in 1809 and cannot be located today.
Technical invention: The Gutenberg system
Gutenberg’s achievement lay not in a single device, but in an interlocking production system. The main components:
- Hand-casting tool for standardised metal type
- Metal alloy of lead, tin and antimony
- Typesetting technique using reusable letters
- Screw press for uniform pressure
- Oil-based printing ink for adhesion to metal
Casting of movable metal type
The casting of letters began with the production of mirror-inverted dies (patrices) made of hardened steel. These were struck into soft copper to create matrices – recessed negative moulds. Using a hand-operated casting device, an alloy consisting of 50–75% lead, 15–30% antimony and 10–20% tin was cast into the matrix at 250–300 °C. A skilled worker produced 3,000 to 5,000 metal letters daily – all virtually identical in height and width.
The standardised movable type could be reused as often as required. This standardisation was the decisive economic advantage over hand-carved wooden blocks.
Composition, plate-making and the printing process
Typesetters assembled individual letters into lines and pages using a square – always mirror-inverted to the final print. Spacers and gaps created justified text and a visually uniform typeface.
The finished typeset was fixed in the printing block and placed in the wooden screw press – inspired by wine and oil presses. Slightly dampened paper or parchment was pressed firmly for 5–10 seconds and then laid out to dry. One cycle per page took only a few minutes.
Printing ink and materials used
Gutenberg developed a viscous, oil-based ink made from linseed oil varnish and soot, which adhered to metal type – water-based inks would have failed. This ink dried quickly and allowed for double-sided printing without smudging. Paper made from linen rags served as an inexpensive mass-market medium, whilst parchment was used for luxury editions. Coloured initials and headings were usually added by hand by rubricators – an art that gave the printed book a handwritten feel.
The Gutenberg Bible: a masterpiece of early book printing

The 42-line Gutenberg Bible (B 42) was produced in Mainz between 1452 and 1454 as the first great masterpiece of European book printing.

Several typesetters and up to a dozen printers worked simultaneously – an early form of division of labour in mass production. The Gothic Textura typeface used was modelled on magnificent manuscripts. The layout was slightly adjusted during production (originally 40 lines), indicating technical refinement.
