Description
Frame-less Viking tent, 3 x 2.7 x 2 m, 350 gsm, natural colour
Viking tents have many advantages over other medieval tents: they are robust, have a sturdy construction that ensures they can be pitched on solid ground – as tent pegs aren’t strictly necessary – and you can give free rein to your creativity when designing your frame.
The well-known models are based on the finds from Oseberg and Gokstad, which, however, were not completely preserved and have therefore been partially reconstructed on the basis of conjecture. Nor can anything definite be said about the actual use of these tents. It is not entirely clear whether they were actually used outdoors or were merely erected for the Althing. Another theory suggests that they were market tents. The word ‘Krämer’ is derived from the Old High German ‘cram’, which means ‘tent’. According to this theory, they were used at markets in natural harbours.
As the size of the original artefacts would pose a logistical challenge for most of us, we have made them slightly smaller and therefore more manageable.
The Viking tent, measuring 3.0 x 2.7 x 2 m, can accommodate up to three people with luggage, whilst the smaller version, measuring 2.0 x 2.3 x 1.8 m, has room for two people.
Please note that the A-frame tent is supplied without a frame!
Our tents and camp tarpaulins are pre-waterproofed and therefore water-repellent. To maintain and renew the waterproofing, we recommend regular treatment with a waterproofing spray, e.g. PLUVONIN. This will ensure you get many years of enjoyment from your tent.

All measurements are approximate and may differ from the product delivered. The tents are handmade, which makes them appear as authentic as possible, but may also result in the odd minor imperfection. Cotton is a natural fabric that behaves differently under various external conditions; that is, it can shrink or stretch considerably. Please do not try to stretch the tent fabric with excessive force. This increases the risk of it tearing or the seams coming apart.
Important information on the erection, use and maintenance of our historical tents
To ensure you enjoy your Viking tent, Roman tent, Saxon tent, knight’s tent, medieval tent, merchant’s tent or medieval market stall for many years to come, the following tips may be helpful:
Do not tighten the ropes too much, as natural materials such as wood and cotton change with changes in humidity and need room to expand or contract. This will prevent, for example, the openings for the poles in the roof from widening, which could later allow water to seep in. At night, we recommend loosening the ropes slightly, as humidity rises significantly and there is a risk of excessive pressure being exerted on your tent. Please also loosen the ropes slightly in the event of rain or high humidity. After use, be sure to dry your tent if it has become damp, as otherwise there is a risk of mould. Under no circumstances should you use chemical or other cleaning agents to clean your tent. It is best to remove dried-on dirt with a brush. When storing the tent for a longer period, please separate all items (pegs, ropes, etc.) from the tent fabric and ideally pack everything separately. Ensure that all parts are dry and are stored in a dry place.
