The Falkensteiner Ritterbund e.V. (Falkenstein Knights' Association) was founded in Flintsbach in 2001 to bring local and contemporary history from 800 years ago to life. The members represent various classes of the population at that time, from knights and priests to craftsmen and farmers. Their portrayals are based on recognised historical sources, in particular the "Codex Falkensteinensis" from 1166/67, which was written by Count Siboto IV.
The group attaches great importance to authenticity and manufactures its own equipment, such as leather boots, helmets and shields. This equipment is tested in use to combine theory and practice. Their impressive projects include the construction of a stone slinger called "Burgunda" and a ballista that can shoot large spears.
Their interest in contemporary history is also evident in their collaboration with the monument preservation authority, such as in the restoration of Kirnstein Castle. The group even has its own castle with a moat and drawbridge. Through their work, they shed light on the "dark Middle Ages" and show that this period was not as gloomy as is often assumed.
