Medieval combat, archery and the Battle of the Lettuces in Villena
From 26 to 28 March 2026, the city of Villena in the Valencian Community will celebrate the 24th edition of the Medieval Festival. This festival, which has been designated a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest, takes visitors to the streets of the old Arab quarter at the foot of the Castillo de la Atalaya, one of the best examples of Almohad military architecture in Spain.
The three-day programme combines spectacle and humour: medieval combat in armour, impressive displays of falconry with eagles and falcons, a medieval craft market, troubadour music and, as a unique highlight, the famous Battle of the Lettuces – a symbolic battle with vegetables that revisits the local festive tradition and is the most photographed moment of the event. Artisans showcase their crafts in blacksmithing, glassmaking, pottery and weaving.
