Description

Leggings first became popular amongst the ruling classes from the 11th century onwards – their origins are thought to lie in Byzantium – but gradually spread to the general population as well.

These woollen leg coverings were designed to be worn tightly, like tights, and were intended primarily to accentuate men’s calves attractively. The tight leggings, which were always made of woollen and could be seen with or without an integrated foot section, henceforth defined the ideal of beauty in men’s fashion. By the early 15th century, leggings began to resemble closed trousers more and more; that is to say, they became higher up the leg and eventually joined at the top.

With the success of leggings, the shapely calf became one of the fashion icons of male attractiveness for centuries. Gaiters should therefore not fit loosely like modern trousers, but rather like tight-fitting tights. This is made possible by the properties of the wool.
